FISH CHEEKS by Amy Tan (introduction)
Fish Cheeks is a story that gives us the thinking of being a
patriotic. The author really conveys the message from the story. The author
really crafted the story perfectly. You can see the plot is moving and you will
just learn three lessons from the story: One:"You will be proud of what
you are.", Two:"You will feel how
an individual criticize his/her own nation and nationality, Three:"You
will realize that you must be proud that you are different", lastly,
Four:"You will see the reality behind why God made each one of us
different.".

FISH CHEEKS by Amy Tan (setting)
AT THE BEGINNING:
The setting of the story is it is WINTER SEASON and it is CHRISTMAS EVE.
Let's find out what is the conflict of the story!
I fell in love with the minister's son the winter I turned fourteen. He was not Chinese, but as white as Mary in the manger. For Christmas I prayed for this blond-haired boy, Robert, and a slim new American nose. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried.
Dark and cold... Christmas Eve... The smoke of the food goes by... Shabby Christmas tree |
Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan (conflict)
This is the conflict of the story:
As said a while ago, the father invites the minister's family to have a dinner with them. Then they arrived and eat with the family. When Amy's mother brought out the steamed fish the relatives licked the end of their chopsticks. Then Robert grimaced. Amy's father plucked out the soft meat below the eye and said "Amy, your favorite!", then she wanted to disappear. Then his father belched loudly, this is a custom in China which shows that you are satisfied and she wants to disappear again because of the EMBARRASMENT!!!

This is my feedback for the story Fish Cheeks:
Fish Cheeks is a story that can give you some reasons why you must be proud of your nationality's pride. "Your shame is to have shame" that's what Amy's mother tell her after the dinner. It means that you are ashamed just because you want to have shame on yourself. It's an eye opener to all of us that not all thing are things to be ashamed of. That's what the author wants us to understand when we read this story. This story is non-fiction so we can know that all the thing in here is true. You must accept and respect the other nation's customs and traditions and be proud of what you are. Be different and show the world that you have a different way of living life.
